About the Downers Grove, Illinois Area
Downers
Grove
Living in Downers Grove truly
does provide "Extraordinary Options", as a both a place to live and to work.
Named for its first settler, Pierce Downer, the community's heritage features a
unique and interesting blend of people, places and events. This is an
ever-growing area in a maturing phase, with some residential development and a
flourishing business community.
This is a community of 48,000
persons located in the Chicago metropolitan area. The Village is thirty-five
minutes west and slightly south of the Chicago Loop and provides easy access to
the entire metropolitan region.
The vista of Downers Grove shows a
well planned community with an excellent commercial and retail tax base,
diverse and well maintained housing, quality education and health care, and
excellent community facilities. The citizens of Downers Grove care about their
community as demonstrated by a long tradition of civic service and
involvement.
The Tivoli Movie Theater is a cultural hub. It was first
opened in 1928 and was the second theater in the United States to accommodate
sound films. Two local theater groups regularly perform there.
Fishel Park is home to craft shows,
concerts and antique car shows. The Downers Grove Park District offers more
than six hundred programs, as well as childcare. Downers Grove Golf Club is
noted as the site of the first 18-hole course in the United States, built in
1892.
The village is proud that such major employers
as Swift-Eckrich, APCO Technical Services, Pepperidge Farm, ServiceMaster,
Spiegel Company and Swift have their headquarters in Downers Grove. These firms
are joined by over two hundred smaller firms who contribute to a vibrant
business climate in the village. Retail shopping opportunities abound within
the community.
Housing
Many houses coming on the market are
less than five years old. Though new construction is slowing, there is still
high end housing. Single-family home prices range from $125,000 to $1,000,000+.
The average 1999 sale price was $214,000. A blend of old and new construction
gives the area a unique attractiveness. The predominant styles are Colonials
and bilevels. Since vacant lots are rare, many homeowners choose to remodel or
add a room to their homes. Condominiums and townhouses are available and range
in price from $75,000 to $459,000.
Education
Elementary children attend Districts
58 and 69, and high school students attend District 99. The teaching staff of
all the districts is well trained and excellent. The children participate in
"Seniors and Youth Learning Together", a local television program in which
seniors and students exchanges skills, such as computing, quilting and
ceramics.
